About our Presenter
Jamie Melvin – Elizabeth River Project
Jamie Melvin serves as the Engagement and EcoDistrict Manager for the Elizabeth River Project, where she works directly with neighborhoods, businesses, and community partners to promote environmental stewardship and sustainable practices along the Elizabeth River.
Her work focuses on engaging local communities in practical ways they can reduce pollution, support habitat restoration, and become active partners in protecting the river for future generations.
About the Elizabeth River Project
The Elizabeth River Project is a Norfolk-based nonprofit founded in 1991 to restore the health of the historic Elizabeth River and protect its long-term environmental and economic value to the region.
By the early 1990s, decades of industrial pollution and runoff had left large portions of the river severely degraded and considered one of the most polluted waterways in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
Community members, businesses, schools, and local governments joined together to reverse that damage, forming the Elizabeth River Project to lead restoration and education efforts.
Today, the organization works through partnerships, rather than regulation alone, to reduce pollution, restore habitats, educate the public, and help communities adapt to environmental challenges.
