🚶‍♂️ Best Practices & City Rules for Walking Dogs

Walking your dog is a great way to enjoy our neighborhood—and it comes with responsibilities. Following city regulations helps ensure a positive experience for both pet owners and non-pet owners.

City of Norfolk Dog-Walking Rules:

  • Dogs must be on a leash (no longer than 6 feet) in public spaces, unless inside a designated off-leash dog park.
  • Owners must pick up and properly dispose of pet waste. Failing to do so can result in fines and contribute to pollution in our waterways.
  • Dogs are not permitted on school property, playgrounds, or athletic fields.
  • Curb your dog. Keep them out of private yards and gardens.
  • Do not leave pets tied up and unattended in public.

Tips for Being a Good Neighbor While Walking Your Dog:

  • Carry extra waste bags and offer one to a neighbor in need.
  • Greet others courteously and ask before allowing dogs to interact.
  • Be especially considerate near homes with small children, seniors, or those with mobility issues.

🐶 Dogs and Neighborhood Harmony

We understand that dogs can sometimes be a source of frustration for neighbors—whether it's barking, loose dogs, or waste left behind. We hear and respect those concerns. At the same time, many residents walking their dogs help make Lafayette-Winona feel more alive, connected, and even safer. Seeing neighbors out and about, especially during early morning and evening hours, adds an informal layer of watchfulness and community presence.

Let’s continue to be thoughtful pet owners, kind neighbors, and advocates for a clean, welcoming, and vibrant neighborhood—for both humans and hounds alike.
